Specialties Manufacturing Company began in Detroit, Michigan in 1932, manufacturing a slide switch for an interior light inside both the Hudson Motor Car and the Packard Motor Car. Within 10 years SPEMCO became a registered trade name. Before World War II SPEMCO became a Wholesale Distributor for Arrow Hart Specialty Switches, changing the direction of the company from manufacturing to distribution.

In 1972 Douglas W. Gmeiner and his partners, Frank "Skip" Gmeiner and Mark Pinney purchased the company. A new building was purchased in St. Clair Shores, Michigan near Detroit, where the company is currently headquartered. Within a few years sales offices were opened in Grand Rapids, Michigan and Hartford, Connecticut.

Today SPEMCO is a well known respected stocking distributor for the leading manufacturers of switches, circuit breakers, relays, indicator lights and numerous other electro-mechanical devices.
